Implementation started
Shipping causes underwater noise in the Baltic Sea. Ship propellers produce low frequency noise that can cause physiological stress to aquatic organisms, disrupt their ability to find their way and disturb their communications. The aim of the measure is to promote the implementation and further development of the guidelines that have been prepared by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reduce the amount of underwater noise caused by merchant shipping and to take into account the objectives and regulations adopted by the IMO to reduce noise caused by engines, propellers and hulls in the national legislation.
Objective of the measure:
Shipping is safe and its adverse environmental effects are as low as possible. The Government of Åland will continue to support the activities of the IMO to reduce the amount of underwater noise.
