DESCRIPTION

The current eutrophication of the aquatic environment caused by phosphorus and nitrogen as well as the loading of environmental poisons are a serious threat to Åland’s society. Examples of the deterioration of the marine environment include algal blooms, increased invasion of near-shore water areas by annual filamentous algae, anoxic seabed areas and changes in the occurrence of fish.

Objective of the measure:

A combination of policy instruments, development work and studies is proposed as supplementary measures in order to find the best win-win solutions to prevent eutrophication problems that have their origins in the various activities of society, such as agriculture and forestry, fish farming, maritime transport and dredging. The measures also include a proposal for developing water management. This work is being carried out on a continuous basis.
