DESCRIPTION

New problematic aquatic environment issues keep emerging. These may relate to microplastics, pharmaceuticals or new chemicals, the effects of which in the aquatic environment and on organisms have been little studied. Alternative solutions, studies, policy instruments (including amendments to legislation) and methods must be discussed with NGOs, such as Ålands Natur och Miljö (Åland Society for Nature and Environment), and other interest groups. Preventive work with information activities targeted at consumers is important. For instance, municipalities and other operators can, on a voluntary basis, choose to make decisions concerning their procurement activities to exclude all products containing microplastics.

Objective of the measure:

The Government of Åland has prepared a comprehensive plastics strategy and an action plan on microplastics and also works on these issues in various contexts to minimise any effects on sensitive aquatic environments. Work on the action plan and information activities is carried out on a continuous basis.
